and the sound of the V-12 Merlin engine to gorgeous for mere words, it is a Spitfire, perhaps one of the most evocative planes of World War Two,
thirty years ago this Spitfire was little more than a rusting shell in a South African scrapyard, yesterday the fighter, airworthy again after years of painstaking work, fetched a record £1.78million at auction, it was bought by British adventurer Steve Brooks who plans to keep it in this country and keep it flying,
'I'm a great believer that things like this were built to be used, not to be museum pieces,' he said. 'The Spitfire is a terrific flying machine, it's also British and should stay in Britain.' British and proud of it.
Beautiful plane indeed... the fastest WW2 plane too, if memory serves.
ReplyDeleteMy personal WW2 favorite is the P-38 Lightning.
Dear Jil, I am not to good on plane speeds but you may be right for a propellor plane, but I am guessing the fastest was either the rocket plane or the ME 262 twin jet, both at the end of WW 11 and I think both by Messershmit, sorry about the spelling! best regards, Stan and Diana.
