we did not find anything that we found interesting, amusing or just plain weird!
mind the hot oil!
and in we go, lots of fresh fruit as you would expect,
with plenty of garlic and spices,
not to mention vegetables,
on our travels I often see these, they seem to be flowers, but I have no idea what they are for,
like many markets pretty much every vegetable you can think of is here, except lettuce,
in a previous post I mentioned bamboo shoots, I pictured the small ones, here are the big ones, 4" or so across at the base,
on to the flower section,
and past the fish shop,
lots of cactus for sale,
many of which have been grafted,
these are called moon cactus, the top red part of them will not survive without being grafted to the lower half,
new for this week is this massage stall, I had not seen it here on previous visits,
one of the mobile stalls,
Diana returned with some grapes to munch on this afternoon and evening,
on the way back to the bike I noticed this go-kart with a difference,
instead of sitting you stand on it holding the upright handle and throttle, steering it by moving the control column left or right, the throttle is the twist grip on the top of the column,
looking at the size of the engine it looks like it might be quite fast,
whilst in the market Diana had bought a hairdressing accessory, a small hoop that you put your hair through, at 10 baht a bargain!
Mark called in to say hello, then after he left it was off to the weekend night market,
slightly overcast sky,
a couple of stalls opposite the bar this evening, one selling clothes, 59 baht 2 for 100,
plenty of fruit,
and lots of shoppers,
the pet section had a few as well,
the two market shrines,
this the smaller one,
sunset over the market,
there were a few customers at the bar this evening,
Diana spotted something she liked at one of the stalls, so a quick picture as I zoomed in with the camera,
we were joined by Sa and some of her family,
and of course Brian and Mr. Tony, after we had left the bar it was home to watch some satellite television, this evening there was a series of programmes about antiques dealers that we had not watched before, so it was great fun guessing how much the items were going to be sold for, we then said our goodbyes to Mr. Tony and we were off to bed.
This isn't meant to be definitive, but your picture P1160614 seems to show [phonetic spelling] "dok-ka-jill." It grows wild in Issan, near the Lao border, and has a mild, ginger taste. It is traditionally served steamed. Regards from Ken C.
ReplyDeleteDera Ken C, many thanks for the information, I have often seen it in markets and thought that it looked quiet pretty but guessed it was used in cooking, but not what for, many thanks again, best regards, Stan and Diana.
ReplyDeleteIn reply to the parking at Friendship Supermarket, first of all all the workers at Friendship are hard working and work long hours, I know nearly all personally and can say they are not mafia for sure, secondly nowhere on the sign does it say free parking it does mention a parking fee per hour which is waved if you park while using the store, however if like most people you try to get free parking by buying a few items and then walk past the parking attendants who know full well your car is in the car park and you have chanced your arm instead of using the market car park to save yourself 10 or 20 baht, yes you got caught and paid the price :-), most days in the car park it is managed very well but on market day the car park is rammed with bikes and cars making life very hard for the attendants to find room for real shoppers, if it was your supermarket how would you manage it??. I have seen the way alot of farang behave in Friendship and its nothing short of embarrassing, eating oranges on the way around the shop and not paying for it, the large amount of shoplifting that goes on is crazy, some farang talk to the girl staff as if they were in the bar and even touching them inappropriately, Nick nick__@hotmail.co.uk
ReplyDeleteDear Anonoymus, I agree with everything you say, but the point is if you spend money in Friendship your ticket is stamped at the check out, spend 300 baht and you recive 1 hours free parking, 600 baht for 2 hours etc, we spent 900+ baht but only stayed for 1 hour 20 minuets, our ticket was stamped at the check out, but 100 baht was still demanded by the parking attendents, in case you think this is a one off, one off one of our friends who happens to be thai also had this trick played on her, she and her husband no longer shop at Friendship, best regards, Stan and Diana.
ReplyDeleteFirst of all thank you for your reply :-) unfortunately the system does not work like that as you may suspect, 300 baht for the first hour correct but for two hours you need to spend 1,500 baht or more which it does state that on the parking ticket, apparently it is ok to go to the market if your ticket covers you for the time spent in the car park, as your ticket did not cover you for the two hours it does not cover you for the first hour so it becomes void hence 100 baht, I know what your thinking how unfair but I pay the police more than 1000 baht every month and I have every document you can think of for my bike, also I was punched kicked and had a bottle put over my head for helping a tourist in walking street he was a 70 year old who was trying to stop a drunk touring being robbed he was kicked to the floor and kicked repeatedly in the face, no police came to help and farang were taking pictures, maybe I was stupid for helping out but at least my conscience is clear, I have noticed Pattaya is getting worse which is a real shame. oh I was not Anonoymus I left my name and email at the bottom of post :-) Nick.
ReplyDeleteDear Nick, many thanks for your comments, I must have miss read the ticket, I was sure at the time that was what it said, I was obviously mistaken, if ever I take my truck back to go shopping at Friendship I will read the fine print! however it still does not alter the fact that no receipt was offered or given which I find strange if the payment was going to the management. I am sorry to hear that you are getting stopped by the police, we have been stopped a few times, but on showing my driving license (not a copy) and the bikes tax, we have always been waved along, hopefully that will continue to be the case. Fortunately we have never witnessed someone in the trouble you describe, in truth I do not know quite what we would do, we hope you enjoy reading the blog, best regards, Stan and Diana.
