What A Totally Brilliant Idea,

take uranium that is far less enriched and of the same type safely being used in Russian icebreakers,

put the reactor it powers on a floating barge and hey presto, a self contained power plant that can be towed anywhere, the Akademik Lomonosov seen above being built and an impression of the finished barge will produce an impressive 70 megawatts of electricity – more than enough to support a mid-sized city, it will also desalinate ocean water to increase regional freshwater supplies,

the icebreaker is to sail in the Barents, Pechora and Kara seas, and in shallower parts of the Yenisei River and in the mouth of the Ob River, but just think if some one wanted to give a gift to the world, what a difference a number of vessel like this could make if they were built and moored near areas that can sometimes suffer from natural disasters, just tow the barge to the affected area, then electricity and water on tap,

from the safety aspect remember all U.S. Navy aircraft carriers and submarines are nuclear-powered and we all remember that the U.S. Army deployed a floating nuclear power plant on a barge, the Sturgis, at the Panama Canal from 1968 to 1976, at the time, there was an electricity shortage as water for hydroelectric power was diverted to accommodate increased military ship traffic through the Canal Zone due to the Vietnam War and the closing of the Suez Canal, so the concept can be done and has been before,

well I thought it was a good idea, I wonder if any of the worlds philanthropist will think the same and step up to the plate and provide areas that in time of emergency desperately need electricity and drinking water?
