As Art Thefts Go,

the one in 1990 at the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum in Boston, 

 takes some beating, at 1:24 a.m. on March 18, 1990, two policemen demanded to be buzzed in by the guard at the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum in Boston, at least, they looked like policemen, once inside the Venetian-palazzo-style building, the men ordered the guard to step away from the emergency buzzer, his only link to the outside world, they handcuffed him and another guard and tied them up in the basement, for the next 81 minutes, the thieves raided the museum’s treasure-filled galleries, then they loaded up a vehicle waiting outside and disappeared,

leaving behind numerous empty picture frames where the thieves had cut the works from them,

their haul included works by Rembrandt, Vermeer, Manet and Edgar Degas, to date, the Gardner heist is the largest property theft in U.S. history, experts have assessed the current value of the stolen art at more than $600 million, now 26 years later, the case remains unsolved, so any amatuer sluthes out there put your mind to work, just think of the $5 million reward!, where is Sherlock Holmes when you need him? there is a certain urgency in this case as the last person alive the authorities think is involved in this case is not getting any younger, Robert V. Gentile is 79, is reliant on a wheelchair, and has diabetes, heart disease and high blood pressure, so will this case ever be solved? who knows!
