in the mid 1950s,
in a number of friends homes one or more members of the family,
would be making rugs,
some were quite course, rag rugs they were called, but others were fine and delicate using special hooped tools called latch hoops to pull the yarn or wool through the canvas backing,
but here is the thing,
all of the rugs above, all roughly 5 feet or so across are all hyper-realistic paintings!
they are the work of Antonio Santin, born in 1978 in Madrid, Spain, each picture
is painted using thick segments of paint to give the impression of texture and depth,
includes bulges and creases to give a more life like appearance, and that could hide a human body beneath, previously working with still lifes, Santin told The Creators Project
that He calls his rug series
“figurative paintings without a figure,” eerie pieces that give an illusion of
a body hidden beneath the surface, he graduated with a degree in Fine Arts
from the Universidad Complutense de Madrid in 2005. You can see more of his rug
paintings on his website and Instagram, I have to say it, they look so real.
