remarked how tasty some white radishes were,
two farmers in China’s Hubei province decided to let their
neighbours take a bag or two of their newly-grown crop, Xu Jiuge, one of the
farmers told the Chutian Metropolis Daily newspaper that he and his partners
decided to let their neighbours take a few radishes for home consumption, what
could possibly go wrong? after all, they only had a few neighbours, and if each
took a bag or two of radishes, it would not impact their hundreds of tons of
harvest, but word got out that there were free radishes to be picked, no one
knows who made up the rumour that the farmers were giving away white radishes
for free, but one thing is for sure, the rumour could not be stopped, it spread like wildfire, by the next day, the
farmers’ fields were already overrun by people they had never seen before, some
of whom had travelled a long way for some free radishes and would not be denied,
some of the freeloaders even live streamed their radish picking session on
social media, inviting their friends to join them, the farmers tried calling
the police, but there was only so much they could do to contain the masses, and
the cost to the farmers? “Most people came on Tuesday, from 7am to 10pm, there
were people all over the field,” Xu said. “I estimated there were 3,000 people
that day. Some of them had travelled from 120km away.” there was nothing for the
owners to do but sit and watch their 500 ton harvest evaporate in front of
their eyes, their kindness cost them US$42,000 in losses, Ouch! it just goes to show how kindness can spectacularly backfire, photograph Weibo.
