I bemoaned the fact that grey squirrels had ousted our native red squirrels,
on Tuesday as it happens, well today some truly great news, a start is hopefully being made to eradicate the long haired tree rats with good PR, it is estimated that grey squirrels, as well as spreading squirrel pox which they are immune to, but kills our native squirrels, cost the UK economy around £40 million every year, but now a New Invasive Species Order, has been announced, legislation introduced by the
U.K.’s Department of Agriculture, Environment and Rural Affairs, criminalises
the rescue of non-native species, at last a step in the right direction, naturally the tree hugging bleeding hearts are up in arms, oh dear, how sad, never mind, what a great joy it will be to see the eradication of the grey and get our native wonderful red squirrels back, a note to the Department of Agriculture, Environment and Rural Affairs, please eradicate the Canadian geese as well, a roast goose, what a nice thought for next Christmas, along with squirrel pie!
When living in Minneapolis Minnesota the state used prisoners from the state prison to trap unwanted Canadian Geese flocks in large nets. They had a special truck along from the poultry processing plant that took all the geese and processed them. THEN the prisoners had cooked goose dinners once a week all winter. Pretty effective way to remove the geese and use them so the bleeding hearts could not complain. Maybe they should try this solution in the UK!
