If You Live In Japan,

mid July is the season for giving,

and if you want to think outside of the box for a present,

this is the store for you, Kagurazaka Saitou, they sell one thing and on thing only, chicken, but why give gifts in July? in is a fact that gift giving is ingrained in Japanese culture and there are two major seasons for it. Ochugen, which happens around mid-July, is one of them while the other is Oseibo, at the end of the year, although it must be said the tradition in some place is starting to die out, Ochugen is derived from the ceremonial day of Taoism on July 15th, a tradition that merged with Buddhism to create what is a show of appreciation to those who helped or supported you during the first half of the year. The gifts are usually edible like seasonal fruits or wagashi treats, but remember–the beautiful thing is that the emphasis is not on the gift itself, but rather the act of giving. The value of the gift is of less importance than the presentation and thoughtfulness in which it is presented,

back to the chicken shop, the 9-piece set (pictured above) goes for 2000 yen, at today's rate £12.25 or $14.70,

the 6 piece set is 1,200 yen at today's rate £7.35 or $8.82,

everything is made to order so your chicken is always fresh, You can also order online and then walk in and pick up your order, it is making me so hungry looking at this, I have not had breakfast yet! the store is here at 2-chome-12-1 Kagurazaka Shinjuku City, Tokyo, Kagurazaka Saitou (Instagram)  hours: 11AM – 8PM Closed Mondays.
