photograph thewartimekitchen.com dried mash potato is one, another I remember is dried eggs, in WWII they were in short supply, so dried ones were imported from the USA to help elevate the egg shortage, to show how short the UK were of eggs, rationing was implemented allowing a person one fresh egg per week, an extra allowance was allowed for those with special circumstances such as giving expectant mothers and vegetarians two eggs a week, that was for a shortage, but how about a industry that is extremely wasteful making its product dried to ease the cost of transport? and that is the beer industry, the cost of moving beer in its heavy glass bottles is, like drinking bottled water, wasteful in the extreme,

enter Neuzeller Kloster Brewery (Klosterbrauerei Neuzelle GmbH)a brewery in eastern Germany, with a new cost saving product, powdered beer! Just mix with water and hey presto a pint, or I guess a litre of your favourite beverage, “It’s the world’s first complete beer in powdered form and it could change the world,” Stefan Fritsche, the brewery’s managing director, told The Times, “Add water and you’ll get a beer with the complete beer taste including alcohol and carbon dioxide and a head of foam. In principle, we can produce any beer in the world using the method — dark beer, light beer, India pale ale, whatever.” The beer is not meant to replace classic beers, it is mainly designed as an alternative for overseas shipping, as “it makes no sense to import glass bottles, fill them with German water and then send the beer to Africa or China or wherever”, although not the world’s first powdered beer, it defers from all the rest because it can incorporate alcohol and carbonation in the powder, “We want the complete beer taste. We have the foam, we already have the beer taste. We want to add the carbon dioxide in powder form. We want to add the alcohol in powder form,” Stefan Fritsche said, “We can do all that with powder. And, of course, it is absolutely fascinating that we have succeeded. For the first time worldwide.” so the big question, "what does it taste like?"
