to reach the riches next door, normally a bank or safe deposit boxes, but these 8 criminals were digging for oil! 

video Daejeon Provincial Police Agency, via The Koran Herald, recently South Korea’s Yonhap News Agency  reported the capture of eight criminals who had rented an entire hotel in Cheongju, North Chungcheong Province, allegedly they had persuaded to hotels owner that they wanted to buy the building, moving in work started on the tunnel, using just hand tools to keep the noise to a minimum the gang tunnelled 9 meters in a month, the tunnel measured 78 centimetres high and 81 centimetres wide, and here is the crunch, they were just 30cm from their goal before police burst in on the scene, the police were tipped off by the National Intelligence Service, Daejeon Provincial Police Agency said on Tuesday, the second part of the plan was to sell the oil at two gas stations, apparently the ring leader was a former employee of Korea’s state-run pipeline operator Daehan Oil Pipeline Corporation who had been previously fired for attempting to steal oil from another pipeline, the tunnel was filled in under the hotel, I guess this gives a new meaning to digging for oil!
