well here is another council which according to the article has allegedly wasted some of theirs,
photograph Hawkinge Town Council, I guess you could call it, "The Mayors Hat" apparently the mayors hat cost £150 and was used on many occasions, it was lost after being placed in the boot of a car, so a new one was ordered, but not another £150 one, no, the new one had to have gold and all of the trimmings, Hawkinge Town Council said that under council rules, any
expenditure of less than £500 can be approved by both the clerk and the
chairman of the council, and guess what? The new hat was under the limit, £500
before both VAT and shipping, so it did not need full council approval, but
after cost were added it was £609! The current mayor Cllr Chris Johnson this
week moved to defend the purchase however, others, including his predecessor,
leveled sharp criticism over the spend. Following a number of requests from
Local Democracy Reporting Service (LDRS) the town council has refused to
provide a photo of its new gold braided bicorn headgear, at the time of writing
Cllr Johnson refused to comment but defended the expenditure as necessary and
normal purchase, well at least it is a lot less than Bromley council wastes on
vanity projects! For the full article have a look here, as an aside the bicorn hat was supplied by Michaels Civic Robes, just in case any mayors out there need a new hat!
