well it appears that it is not only old rare coins that are being faked, in the UK police have found a small workshop faking in circulation £2 coins, whilst the problem of faked £1 coins has been well known and documented, this is the only one of a few cases of a £2 coin being copied, City of London Police found a smelting machine, ingots of metal and moulds for £2 and £1 coins in a rented room in an office block, just 300 yards away, officers also raided a scrapyard hidden behind a wall of tyres where the coins were coloured with gold spray paint,


it is thought that the gang were hoping to use the influx of tourists to the Olympic Games to put the coins into circulation, Det Chief Insp Dave Evans, who led the operation, said: 'with the set-up they had they could keep producing at a very steady rate — it’s just a matter of putting in the hours', profit margins for fake coins are often higher than for forged notes, even though each unit is worth less, the technology to get all the markings correct on paper money pushes the costs up, this operation was simple but effective',
