than a few years ago, could the photograph above be of an original battery that we all use today? it is an interesting proposal, known as the Baghdad Battery, they were discovered in 1838 while the German archaeologist Wilhelm Konig unearthed what seemed like clay jars. Each of the jars contained an iron rod enclosed in a copper cylinder, naturally, Konig theorized that the objects were ancient batteries used during the Parthian era, as they date back to 200 B.C.E. Dr. Marjorie Senechal, an Art History professor, made her students build replicas of the containers, and guess what? they produced voltage!

but even the discovery is open to question as the Battery Company states that, 'The first battery was discovered in 1936 by railway workers near the city of Baghdad in the midst of an ancient tomb', despite the difference of how they were discovered it appears that these could indeed the precursors of the batteries so many of us now take for granted.
