It It A Toy

or mathematically precise kinetic sculpture and transformable object?

it was designed and made by John Edmark, his kinetic sculptures rely on excruciatingly precise laser-cut wood and internal mechanisms to create optical illusions and other unexpected behaviours, Edmark describes these as 'instruments that amplify our awareness of the sometimes tenuous relationship between facts and perception', if you have some time you can see many more on his Vimeo page, for me the Incremental TransTower is fascinating, each layer rotates slightly faster than the layer beneath it, there are 32 layers in this tower, so the top layer must make 32 complete revolutions before the tower returns to the same state, the internal mechanism designed and fabricated by Paul Stepahin.
