was put out for a public vote,
well the poll closed a few days ago, we mentioned the naming contest last March, the results are now in,
RRS Boaty McBoatface - 124,109
RRS Poppy-Mai - 34,371
RRS Henry Worsley - 15,231
RRS It's bloody cold here - 10,679
RRS David Attenborough - 10,284
Boaty McBoatface winning by over 4 times its nearest rival, so there it is - not- Jo Johnson, the science minister, signalled that ministers
were unlikely to endorse the result, He told the Daily Telegraph: 'You won't be
surprised to know that we want something that fits the mission and captures the
spirit of scientific endeavour, I am grateful to everyone who has participated
in the competition.' I have to say it, if you are going to ask the public and it votes overwhelmingly for one name why then dismiss it? and what a great name, companies are spending millions of pounds to get advertising like this, and this comes free, with kids being encouraged to follow the travels of Baoty, the spin off franchise worth millions, and a new generation of kids following a record of research that no teacher at the kids young age could ever dream of getting them interested in, another opportunity to bring science to youngsters and millions of pounds into science in franchises lost, well done Jo!
