heatwave could find themselves in serious trouble, while people will be wanting
to do all they can to keep cool in the heat wave, wearing flip flops while
driving contravenes Rule 97 of the Highway Code, it states that you must be
"wearing appropriate clothing and footwear to drive a vehicle" and
the aforementioned flip flops do not fit in that category, as it happens I am

Five or six years ago, I actually got pulled over at a police checkpoint here in The Philippines for driving with sandals on. Of course, everyone in The Philippines wears sandals. So while the officer was explaining to me how I shouldn't be driving with sandals on, I made it a point to agree with him, while staring intently at the feet of all the other motorcycle riders driving by wearing sandals.
He obviously got the point and didn't write me a ticket. I honestly think he just wanted to practice his English or find out more about the foreigner in his town than to actually enforce the law. I never switched over to proper shoes, still wear sandals, and have not been hassled about them since.
Dear Jil, as you might expect and I am sure you know, whilst in Thailand wearing flip-flops was de rigueur when driving any sort of transport, luckily I was always wearing casual shoes when driving, but I think the boys in brown if stopped, would have defiantly written a ticket! best regards, Stan and Diana.
