As London's Under Ground Railway,

celebrates it's 150th year anniversary,

here are some pictures that were released by newsreel company British Pathe, which has published a gallery of photographs to coincide with the opening of the first part of the network back in 1863, the images show the demolition of houses and disruption in the capital's streets as neighbourhoods were destroyed to make way for the tracks of the world's first underground railway,

the first stretch of track was just 6km in length - tiny in comparison to the 408km of track used today - and ran between Bishop's Road and Farringdon Street, with just 30,000 people using it on its first day, compared to today when around three million passengers use the Underground every day in 2013, with 275 operating stations across the capital.
