take Kareem Waris Olamilekan,
who hails from Lagos, Nigeria, he started expressing his artistic
talents when he was around six years old, by drawing his favorite cartoon
characters, His big break however, occurred two years later, when he and
his family moved houses and he discovered the Ayowole Art Vocational
Academy, His talent for drawing was evident, and despite facing great financial
difficulties and struggling to buy basic artistic supplies, the young boy
managed to improve his skills to the point where he is now able to draw
detailed photo-like drawings,
“I found an
artist in our new house, so, I saw the apprentice of @ayowole art drawing still
life and I spoke with one of them who asked if I could draw and I told him
yes,” Kareem Waris Olamilekan said in a recent interview, “Later that day, the already
registered students started drawing a “composition of kettle and headphones…so
I stood at a corner and participated with them.”
“He can go
far, farther than even beyond our expectations because I believe with what he
has been doing, he’s going somewhere greater,” Adewole told CGTN Africa, “We used to tell him don’t see yourself like a roadside artist. Believe you can
have a name like Michelangelo, like Davinci.” Kareem Waris
Olamilekan is being hailed as Nigeria’s youngest professional artist, and
already boasts an impressive 27,000 fans on Instagram alone, but his success
did not come easy, He recalls secretly buying 20 sheets of paper every
time his mom would send him shopping for food, so he could have something to
draw on, and using a flashlight in the middle of the night, because his
home had no electricity,
but here is the thing, as of now
the artist is just 11 year old! Kareem told BBC. “My family, we work hard before we put food in our
mouths, before we eat. That’s what inspires me.” what an incredible talent this young man has.
