To Save Money Dudley Council Has Stopped Cutting Some Grass,
well anything to save a bob or two,
but the downside is that grass grows and in times of drought can become a fire hazard, not to mention looking unsightly, well of course the public spirited citizens of Coldstream Drive, Wordsley decided to help, all 350 of them – 90 per cent of the Rectory Fields estate’s residents, so out with the lawn mowers, but wait they have all been banned from helping the council save money, you can see where this is going - health and safety! Dudley Council has stopped mowing the steep verge, and told residents they will be breaking health and safety rules if they go ahead and cut it themselves,
OK I can see that the council prefer a fire risk to being sued for an accident, but this is what I do not understand, the residents offered to pay up to £200 for a contractor to clear the grass but the council refused, surely the contractor would by law have to have their own insurance for their operatives?
I guess some jobsworth in the council have decided it is our mess and we want it left as it is! hopefully common sense will prevail - but with people that work for some councils who knows?

Hi I have a suggestion that might help: the council says cutting the grass is too expensive and too dangerous, so dig it up, spread woodchips over the turf and plant herbs, flowers and ornamental grasses. if the residents dont mind mowing grass would they stretch to maintenence of small spread out community gardens?
Dear Anonymous, I think the problem lies in the fact it is council owed property, like so many of these plots of land the council would still cry H & S if anything happened to one of the residents, but I agree it is such a shame that one of the council's minds does not draft a waver contract in theses circumstances to absolve the council of any accident claims for damages on this or similar plots of land, best regards, Stan and Diana.
