Photographer Jon Smith,

has been filling standard incandescent light bulbs with various objects, 

liquids and other substances before causing them to explode in front of his camera,

in some of his more interesting shots Jon experiments by first dipping the bulb in paint, way above my skill level in photography, also I guess a high speed camera is used, if you have an interest in this sort of thing there is some more of his work here.
