We Had Another Quiet Day,

in the early afternoon Mark called round for a coffee,

then when the market opened we called by for some vegetables and fresh fruit,

we were a little bit early,

so there were not many people in the aisles,

but plenty of produce to chose from,

 some of it strange,

I think these are small egg plants,

and some of the produce familiar like these small,

 and large bamboo shoots,

 we stocked up on pineapple,

and a half melon to snack on later,

in the evening we watched a couple from Poirot, then a couple from Ripper Street, in previous episodes the plot has sometimes been based on true events that happened within the time frame, a couple of episodes ago the dockers strike for a tanner was the plot, tonight the sinking of the Princess Alice, a pleasure steamer that was cut in half by the SS Bywell Castle, a vessel 4 times her size, forms a part of the story in the episode What Use Our Work?

the Princess Alice was licensed to carry 936 passengers, and although there are no exact figures, it is thought that somewhere in the region of 750 people were aboard that day to be thrown into the Thames, in the end, over 115 people were buried without being identified, and the exact number of deaths is unknown, the memorial in Woolwich Cemetery states that 550 people died, but it is known that there were 544 inquests in Woolwich alone and at least 46 elsewhere, this makes the final death toll somewhere closer to 600, again I have to say an excellent series that we both enjoyed immensely, after that we were off to bed.
