What A Load Of Pollacks!
When the marketing experts at Sainsbury's sat down to the task of trying to boost sales of pollack, they had a brainwave,
'Let's give it a new name,' they said, many months and meetings later, the name was chosen - Colin, there is a feeling that the current name is as ugly as the bug-eyed fish itself, while it seems a number of shoppers are wary about asking for pollack, in fact, pollack and its cousins go under a number of different pseudonyms around the world, in Russia they are 'Lyur', while in Denmark they are 'Blaase', the Swedes call them 'Grasej', the Germans tuck into 'Seelachs' and the Portugese opt for the dainty 'Juliana'.
even in the English speaking world, we have several possibilities including Coley, which many will remember from rather grey school dinners, coalfish and even Boston bluefish, my earliest recollections of pollack was that in the mid 50's it was only considered fit to fed the cat with and of course school dinners, I wonder if our taste buds have changed over the years?
