and now they are in the news at the Antarctic,
it appears a colony that has been there for at least 30 to 40 years, more than a million giant king crabs have been found off Antarctica by a remote-controlled submarine, living in the Palmer Deep, a basin 850m below the surface in the continental shelf, scientists fear the effects the crabs could have on the local sealife could be devastating, they said the invasion could 'have major ecological impact', in the report carried by the Proceedings B journal of The Royal Society, it said that the team discovered the crabs accidentally, according to project leader Craig Smith from the University of Hawaii, the most likely reason for the crab invasion was an event, or series of events, that washed warmer water over the Palmer Deep, carrying crab larvae, once there, the crabs quickly exterminated rivals,
or of course they could have hitched a ride on a ship, think Chinese mitten crabs, that arrived in the bilge water of ships from the Far East and are now taking over the River Thames,
now there's a thought, I wonder if a research vessel traveling from the other end of the world introduced them all of that time ago? by the way if you follow the link to the article, the Daily Mail has put a the wrong picture in the story, the fist picture you will see is of the much smaller growing snow crab, Chinonocecetes opilio.
