A TOWN’s bosses are planning to be the first to scrap Gatsos — describing them “a blatant tax on the motorist”.
Civic leaders said the Government keeps ALL the £60 fines — and the £320,000 they pay a partnership to run their 30 speed cameras would be better spent on improved street lighting and vehicle-activated speed signs.
A decision will be made by Swindon Council, Wilts, next week.
Cllr Peter Greenhalgh, Tory member for highways, said: “We’ll install our own road safety systems that we know from studies will be more effective in our area.”
