Do Not Mess With Fish 79!
And You Thought Fish Were Fun!
a young, 'Old Six Legs' has been caught on film, this juvenile coelacanth was filmed by a Japanese marine researcher, the young fish was filmed at a depth of 528ft in Manado Bay off Sulawesi Island, the term '6 legs' was first given to the fish by South African ichthyologist Dr J.L.B. Smith who first described it in 1939, it was named after the lady that found it Miss Marjorie Courtney-Latimer, the Latin name being Latimeria chalumnae, it is a prehistoric survivor from the Cretaceous age, (70 million years ago),
Hans Fricke's film clip of two coelacanths is a 'must see' if you are into this sort of thing, many years ago I read the book A Fish Caught In Time, (if I have lent it to you please let me have it back) the fish pictured above is featured here, if like me you find this sort of thing interesting have a look here at the Bunaken Cha Cha Nature Resort.
