Like Many People,

we enjoy a lay in on a Sunday,

but how to ensure we are not disturbed? you can try the obvious, like switching our alarm clock off, closing our heavy curtains and wearing an eye mask, all will help, but in what about the cock crowing? in 1767, Harunobu Suzuki, a Japanese designer of woodblock print art, created this print titled Niwatori to Danjo (鶏と男女) which translates to ‘a rooster and a couple.’ and what are they doing?

they’ve brought out a pot of sake and are trying to get the rooster so drunk that it doesn’t crow in the morning, and judging by the look on it’s face, the rooster may have caught on to the couple’s plan! to see this,

and many more stunning woodblocks,

like these,

along with many others, are all part of a large Ukiyo-e exhibition in Tokyo that’s going on now through to September 22, 2020, now that I would like to see.
