Going Back To Basics,

in the printing trade,

 means that prints like this,

are made of four separate woodblocks, each one carved to produce just one color,

this is the latest print from Tugboat Printshop

Clover Blossoms is a four-color woodblock print, which means that Tugboat owner and artist Valerie Lueth drew, hand-carved, inked, aligned, and printed four separate panels to comprise the finished piece, we have featured her work before,

Lueth prolifically dreams up and creates new work, and frequently exhibits her prints across the country, Tugboat prints are currently on view at the Staten Island Museum in New York City as part of the Field Notes exhibition, through February 23, 2020,

Leuth also has a solo show at Bloom in West Virginia in November, 2019. Clover Blossoms and other prints are available on the Tugboat website and Etsy shop, you can keep up with Lueth’s meticulously documented studio process on Instagram, I can still remember my days in the print trade, where litho was slowly taking over from letterpress in the 1960s, in the letterpress composition part of the company there were huge numbers of lead covered wood blocks that were used, and a few very old woodblocks, that never seemed to be used, but were just kept as a reminder of days gone past, I wonder where they are now?
