and not in the UK, but it has happened, in the parish town of Highworth, in Wiltshire, 3,000 votes
were counted, but wait for it, there were only 2,477 people voting! the local borough council returning officer, responsible for
the election count, conceded that there had “clearly” been an error but told
residents that, once the result was declared, there was nothing she could
legally do about it, but an appeal might be on the way, which brings me on to this article, about voting on the other side of the pond, the organizers of the 27th DefCom Conference turned hackers
loose on election technology inside a special event called Voting Village, “This
is the Accuvote TSX. It’s used in 18 different states, 8 of which are swing
states,” explains hacker Rachel Tobac, pointing to a voting machine. “I’m gonna
show you how in under 2 minutes, you can use this machine to disrupt an
election,” she continues, “How sophisticated does one have to be to do what you
just did?”, asked the reporter, “I learned it in 15 minutes last year,” she
replied, that would be really messed up if it happens in the next elections, thankfully, the hackers say that the system can be improved and made to be more
secure, so that's a relief.
