we have all heard about the one that got away, but here is one that did not! it is a Nile perch, Lates niloticus, Tim Smith caught the monster in his tiny motor boat on the Victoria Nile in Uganda, it weighed a staggering 249lb, there is a sad side to this story, not only from this fishes point of view,
Nile perch - which themselves have a voracious appetite - were controversially introduced to Lake Victoria and surrounding rivers in the 1950s, quickly decimating native species, unfortunately it was realised to late that the fish would take over and consign to the extinct list a number of endemic species, the perch was introduced to help supplement the diet of locals and adds millions to the local economy, but it is thought that the stock of fish may crash at almost anytime due to commercial overfishing.
