is chasing feathers,
but for Olympia,
Washington-based artist Chris Maynard,
they are his medium,
he makes shadowboxes of cut
feathers depicting the silhouettes of birds as they sing, perch, and swoop
across the canvas, from his web page, 'he has worked with feathers since he was twelve.
His unique feather shadowboxes are recognised by art collectors, bird lovers,
and a wide and interesting variety of people from around the world. He only has
time to turn a small portion of his ideas, which fill many notebooks, into his
shadow box feather designs. His favourite tools are the tiny eye surgery
scissors, forceps, and magnifying glasses passed down through his family, he combines his strong backgrounds in biology and
ecology into not only his art, but also a tabletop book and engaging and
informative talks on the beauty, function, and meaning of feathers. He is a
member of Society of Animal Artists and Artists for Conservation',
above are a number of recent works, some of which will be on view
at an upcoming solo show next year at the Bainbridge Museum of Art also You can see
much more on his Instagram and Facebook pages, and no I am not on commission, but what an almost magical way to use discarded feathers.
