I Bought This Stamp The Other Evening,
I liked it,
as it was one of a set I am collecting of the 1951 Festival OF Britain, but on closer examination I found it was a picture of a railway train named Nellie, designed and built by Frederick Rowland Emett, better known as a cartoonist and illustrator for Punch and Life magazines, well it appears he also made whimsical things and was commissioned to make the Far Tottering and Oyster Creek Railway, a mystical railway he wrote about into reality for the Festival, illustrated on the stamp is Nellie, one of three trains built and run during the festival, although he is not much remembered now one of his mystical creations is known throughout the world, Chitty Chitty Bang Bang was one of Roland Emett's most widely recognized creations, all of this just by buying one stamp!
