It Has Happened Again,

this time in King Harbor Marina, Redondo Beach, California, millions of small fish, including anchovies, mackerel and sardines, have washed up dead in the middle of the night, Staci Gabrielli, marine co-ordinator for King Harbor Marina, on the Los Angeles County coast, has an idea about how this happened, the last time I mentioned a fish phenomenon was in mid January but it appears it has happened again - with a vengeance, Staci noted that in some places the fish were over a foot deep, prime suspect is a red tide, a naturally occurring rapid accumulation of algae in a water column, which will poison fish or starve them of oxygen,

‘All evidence points to oxygen deprivation as cause of death, there is no oil sheen, nor is there a chemical sheen,’ California Department of Fish and Game spokesman Andrew Hughan said, of course there is a reasonable explanation before we blame global warming there may just be too many of them for the local oxygen supply, in the last 100 years, the number of small fish - such as pilchards, herrings, anchovies, sprats and sardines - has more than doubled, double the number of fish but has the oxygen content of the water where they live doubled? who knows, one of natures mysteries, but I am sure scientists will let us know soon to the cause of this latest wipe out.
