with that in mind these 2 volumes have some stunning examples,
they are titled The Art of Japan by Captain F. Brinkley,
published in 1901 by Boston by J B Millet Company,
the two very scarce limited edition supplementary volumes to
Captain Brinkley's analysis of the history of Japan through art, and are beautifully
illustrated throughout in colour,
these are the very scarce first edition of these
two volumes,
they are complete work in themselves,
but they serve as supplements to the author's ten volume
work 'Japan, Described and Illustrated By the Japanese',
only 750 copies of this very scarce two volume work were
produced,
they are the work of the work of Anglo-Irish newspaper owner, editor and scholar
Francis Brinkley, (who deserves better recognition), who resided in Meiji period Japan for over 40 years,
Volume I is dedicated to the pictorial art of
Japan, and volume II to the country's applied art,
illustrated with five colour plates and
twenty-six tipped in colour vignettes to volume I, and seven plates and
twenty-six tipped in photographs in volume 2, yours at Rooke Books here, for just £1,400 at today's rate $1705.14, what a treasure to own.
