at the time it was a growing belief that as CDs became more popular,
the Vinyl record industry would collapse except for a few specialist pressers, but they were wrong, in 2022 Vinyl had outsold CDs for first time in 35 years, according to figures released by
the Entertainment Retailers Association (ERA), overall music
sales increased by three per cent in 2022 to almost £2billion, which is the
highest figure since 2003 and nearly double the level of their low point in
2013, with that in mind I found the video above fascinating, WIRED visited Third Man Pressing in Detroit to document the
particularly labour-intensive production process, from adding the finicky
lacquer coating to etching the matrix
number by hand, the undertaking requires at least 14 steps before the
album is packed and shipped, and each record passes through numerous sets of
hands on the production floor “Vinyl is in the real world. It’s not something
that exists only on your computer or your phone. It’s three-dimensional,” says
one of the pressing plant’s engineers, the video is a mug of coffee long, and I have to say I was amazed at the technology used to ensure a perfect recording, the production was truly amazing!
