Marquetry Is The Art And Craft,

of applying pieces of veneer to a structure to form decorative patterns, designs or pictures,

and in Japan it is an art-form by itself, the term is Hakone marquetry using razor-thin slices of wood, and when used craftsmen can make a Himitsu-Bako (Personal Secret Box) which is a traditional Japanese puzzle box that was designed over 150 years ago in the Hakone region of Japan,

the Hakone Mountains are noted for their great variety of trees, the Japanese puzzle box takes advantage of this wide variety of natural wood colours and textures to produce their elaborate geometric patterns,

grab a mug of coffee if you have time and watch this video, it is fascinating, and no I am not on commission, I find that watching this video was so relaxing, I just hope that youngsters will continue to enter this most amazing wood working craft.
