off the coast at Cape Cod, Massachusetts, image credit: Terry Goss/Wikimedia Commons, the population of great white sharks had been in decline for some time, but has staged a comeback, the CBS News program “60 Minutes” took a recent trip over to Cape Cod to learn more about the increase in numbers of sharks, the visit was part of a segment that aired Sunday about how the population of the predators in the Atlantic Ocean has rebounded over the last two decades, “On Cape Cod this summer, shark sightings and beach closings were about as common as lobster rolls,” correspondent Bill Whitaker said, which is great news for these apex predators,

the locals however are a little apprehensive of the increase in numbers, especially the seals, in this May, 22, 2019, photo, a woman walks with her dogs at Newcomb Hollow Beach, photograph The Associated Press, Cape Cod is now one of the world’s white shark “hot spots.” scientists are attaching electronic tracking tags to as many sharks as they can figure out just how many sharks there are in the  area, it is estimated to be in access of the 200 which have already been tagged, https://t.co/abLBV5IXXW pic.twitter.com/RzNAdEv3kY, 60 Minutes (@60Minutes) September 30, 2019, great news that with public awareness creatures can be spared almost certain extinction before their numbers reach critical point and the species dies out.
