Steve Very Kindly Sent Me An Email,

there was a model railway display on today!

I had no idea that there was one today, so as Diana was going to work I joined her walking to the bus stop,

past a very wet Foxgrove Lodge,
after a number 54 bus followed by a 358, I arrived here at St.John's Church, Eden Park Avenue, Eden Park, BR3 3JN,

it was the Beckenham and West Wickham Model Railway Club, model rail show 2021 sponsored by Kent Garden Railways,

in the first hall,

lots of stalls selling all manner of rolling stock,

mostly OO gauge but there were also models of N and O gauge, for a guide to the different gauges have a look here,

there were of course lots of hobby support stalls as well, this one specialising in literature and DVDs etc,

whilst this one catered for landscapes and scenic backgrounds for layouts,

there as also a display of fine models and radio controlled cars and trucks,

another stall dedicated to OO gauge,

this one O gauge,

I was so tempted!

as I left this hall I spotted this model, I have been watching the television series about Hornby, and this packaging was featured on the program, one of 10 in the series,

I made my way into the next hall where moving displays were running, this one depicting a scene from WWI,

the train bring troops and supplies to the front,

the detail was just so amazing,

even more so when like all of the other displays it all has to be packed away and moved once the display is over tonight,

moving up to O gauge,

there were a number of small dioramas,

and a couple of big ones,

this one with a series of endless loups,

with trains chugging around,

as I mentioned it was pretty big,

and here is the video of it,

many of the layouts were based on a real stations, sidings,

or terminals,

this one an 'L' shape,

this one based on St. Mary's,

this the biggest layout of them all,

there was a circle at one end,

around which another track led to a station,

and turntable, as I mentioned this display was huge,

as were the number of trains that were available to run,

boys and their toys, it is great to see youngsters taking an interest in something other than Gameboy or whatever it is that kids play with today,

a WWII diorama theme for this layout,

that was enjoyed by all,

now down to a smaller scale, N gauge,

the detail so fine,

right down to the coal bunkers and oil barrels,

the engines themselves a marvel of minatristion, to give an idea of size,

from cab roof to track, the OO gauge locomotive is 2 inches or just over 5cm while it’s sibling N gauge is 1 inch / 2.5cm. illustration from Model Railway Engineer,

in the last hall the club shop,

again almost countless stock for sale,

some boxed,

and some unboxed, what a great time I had!

I made a move for home back through the park,

and speaking of a great time, I made a model railway when we were in Thailand,

from memory it was 16 feet X 8 feet,

it was a struggle reaching the middle of it! the trees at the bottom of the photograph waiting to be 'planted',

I should mention that Diana was fast becoming an expert at making them,

well I thought they looked pretty good,

Diana must have made hundreds of them,

the white in the photograph is the river I have yet to colour in,

one of the tunnel entrances,

and turntable shed sans roof,

not yet finished at this time, but I did make this video of the trains running,

this post brought so many memories back, I popped upstairs,

and had a look at the 2 live steam trains that I took to Thailand and then brought back again from Thailand,

and yes they really are live steam, you add water and in each of the locomotives there is a mini boiler that heats the water to steam,

each of the engine has its on special transformer, other than take them out of the boxes to look at them I have never put either of them on a track, you never know one day! I should mention that Hornby dropped the live steam range many years ago, but there is still a Hornby Live Steam Club,

back downstairs it was time for my evening sherry and read,

for tonight a starter of duck pancake rolls,

followed by a Chinese chicken curry, beef in black bean sauce with rice,

rounding off with mango, strawberries, raspberries and blueberries, after a read,

I decided to watch another couple of Squid Games, before episode 9 Diana called, arriving home it was a chat and a coffee before we were off to bed.
